چکیده

Assumption: The body shape relative to the body frame is a given function of time B0(t). We call this the standard shape. The current body shape B(t) is obtained under a translation and rotation of the body frame. The latter is defined by a positional matrix. To say that locomotion has occurred at time t means we have realized at time t a nonzero translation. Example: steady locomotion in two dimensions. Let (xp, yp) be a point on the standard shape at time t. Let the positional matrix may then be written

Three Dimensional Analysis of Flow Past a Solid-Sphere at Low Reynolds Numbers with the Aid of Body Fitted Coordinates

In this paper, the flow-field of an incompressible viscous flow past a solid-sphere at low Reynolds numbers (up to 270) is investigated numerically. In order to extend the capabilities of the finite volume method, the boundary (body) fitted coordinates (BFC) method is used. Transformation of the partial differential equations to algebraic relations is based on the finite-volume method with coll...

A bug on a raft: recoil locomotion in a viscous fluid

The locomotion of a body through an inviscid incompressible fluid, such that the flow remains irrotational everywhere, is known to depend on inertial forces and on both the shape and the mass distribution of the body. In this paper we consider the influence of fluid viscosity on such inertial modes of locomotion. In particular we consider a free body of variable shape and study the centre-of-ma...

Notes on geometry of locomotion of 3-dimensional version of the Purcell's swimmer

We analyse the geometry of locomotion of 3-link mechanism inspired from the Purcell’s swimmer at low Reynolds number, the simplest possible swimmer conceptualized in [1]. The literature has extensively analyzed the problem of plananr locomotion of the Purcell’s swimmer [2], [3], [4], [5]. [6] analyzes its locomotion problem in geometric framework, again for the planar case. The condition of bei...

Simulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar

Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...
